Sewing Machine Know-How
Have you been wanting to learn how to use your beautiful sewing machine since it came into your life but you’re not sure how to begin? Or has it been so long that you’ve forgotten how all the bells and whistles work? We can help! Come to the studio for an hour. Bring your machine (and manual if you have it) and we’ll get you on your way to sewing. The Time Is NOW!
Stitch On! First-Timer Sewing
Level: Beginner, schedule a session that works for you.
Have fun learning how to sew! Learn about your machine, discover different stitches, how to read and cut out patterns. We will cover the fundamentals such as preparing fabric, pinning, cutting, pattern reading, and seam allowance. Students will complete a small project.
Knitting From Scratch
Level: beginner by appointment, Cost: $55 (2.5 hours for single sessions) or $150 (2 hours per session/4 sessions) contact us to arrange times.
Transition from observer to creator. This workshop is designed for people who have no previous knitting experience and for those wanting to begin again. Come as you are and we will bring to life your creative hands! We will begin with the fundamental building blocks of knitting. We will master at least 2 stitches, cast on, cast off, learn how to increase and decrease, read patterns and symbols.
Several sessions recommended.
Slow Stitch: Hand Sewing Basics
Level: Beginner, Schedule a session that works for you
It all begins with a single stitch. And long before there were machines to assist, our hands did all the work! The workshop covers the most valuable and most basic techniques of sewing. Students will learn 5 to 6 fundamental stitches, how to securely sew on a button and snap, seams and edge finishing, various decorative stitches, and what are the best tools for the job.
With these basic skills you will be free to sew and mend anywhere life takes you!
Beginning to Spin
Level: Beginner, by appointment
Want to try your hand at spinning your own yarn? Do you have a wheel that is begging to be used? Do you just have the urge to feel the sheep's fleece glide through your fingers and magically turn into yarn? We are here to help with this crash course!
We have a wheel for you to learn on or bring your own. Let's get started!

How do we achieve sustainability? Where does one person even start to make a difference? With this new class we aim to teach students how to begin to make their own wardrobe a sustainable one. Students will bring in garments they no longer wear or do not like the way it fits and together we will come up with creative ways to up-scale, revamp, repurpose it. Let’s all work to keep clothes out of the land- fill!
A Life Line: Knitting and Sewing Help

Too often we toss our high hopes into a closet when we get stuck. If you're stumped by instructions or the project is not coming together as it should let us help you through it.
Sew Much More! Pattern Sewing
Level: Beginner Plus - basic sewing skills and machine knowledge
Cost: $55 (2 1/2 hours per session)
When: Schedule a session that works for you
We learn so much just by "doing". This workshop is designed to guide you the steps and instructions of a written pattern. You may already have a pattern you want to make or you may be looking for ideas of where to start. We can help. Instruction is geared towards students who know their way around the sewing machine and the basics (preparing fabric, pinning, cutting, seam allowance).
Bring with you, your washed fabric, thread, and your complete pattern. We have machines for you to use if you do not wish to carry in yours.
Please Note: Most patterns take more than 2 hours to work through to completion. One session will certainly get you on your way. You may wish to sign up for additional time as needed.

Kids In Stitches! Birthday Parties
Our fiber birthday parties are a fun and creative way for kids to celebrate their day with friends. Prior to the event, the birthday child chooses one of our various textile projects which all guests will make in our studio. The Fiber Works MPLS studio is loaded with all the materials needed to fuel their imaginations and keep their hands engaged. Each child will leave with a piece uniquely their own.
Sewing time is about 2hours with about 30 minutes available for treats and fun chatter.
We provide all sewing materials, you provide any food items and decorations.
Cost: $250 for the first 5 children. $20 per additional guest with a maximum of 10.

Fall Mittens
These are the perfect pair to wear while walking in the woods, to the bus or just around the block. Made from sock yarn (or any fingering weight yarn). The pattern is Hand Socks from Sisu Designs. They are light, flexible mittens that are just right for crisp fall days. Sock knitters, you will love this new use for all the leftover yarn you have - mix it up!
- Level: Confident Beginner. You are comfortable with both the knit and purl stitch and can work them with ease. You can work in the round with four needles. You enjoy working with or can’t wait to try working with sock weight (fingering) yarn!
- Techniques: Provisional cast-on, M1 increase
- We provide: Our inspiring studio, experienced instructor
- You bring: Pattern, which you may purchase here, 1 skein of sock/fingering weight wool, a set of double pointed US size 1 or 2 needles (I used #2), tapestry needle.
- Class length: 2 sessions, 2 hours each

Rippled Scarf
Scarf with a Flare
This wavy scarf is just different enough from your basic garter stitch to keep you knitting to the next row. It is a repetitive pattern and a good introduction to following a chart. A soft worsted weight wool or wool blend would make this an attractive and cozy accessory.

- Level: Beginner. You are comfortable with both the knit and purl stitch and can work them with ease.

Soup Bowl Cozy
We love these extremely useful bowl holders! An essential kitchen item for the hot bowl of soup. Come make your own in this guided workshop. Great workshop for beginners; the perfect workshop for any of you who have taken Stitch On!. Soup’s on!

Knit Night
Knit Night - 1/24/25
A time to knit in a gathering of needles, and yarn, and knitters. Sign ups are encouraged so that we can plan accordingly but it's not required. We will be there regardless so that anyone can drop in during that time.
Open to all!

Upcycled Jewelry
Meld new life into your broken, tired bling! Learn basic jewelry-making skills to create earrings, pendants, necklaces and bracelets. Use broken or out-of-favor jewelry, from our stash or from yours, to turn old adornments into something new! No heat tools will be used, just simple hand-tools, glue, and our funky finds.
Basic items like ear-wires, chain, stringing materials and beads will be available. Bring your old jewelry if you have any, but it is not required. This is not youreasy bead-stringing. Material fee: $20 per student.
Chrochet: Granny Square Scarf
Meets once,2.5 hours session
Expand your crochet skills with this scarf done in the classic granny square pattern. We will provide you with all the materials and instruction you need to complete it. Meets twice: option1: 2/28 and ¾ option 2: 3/8 and 3/15
Here is the perfect pattern to jump into sock knitting! A basic formula worked with worsted weight wool. The workshop is 2 sessions over two weeks.
Level: Confident Beginner. You are comfortable with both the knit and purl stitch and can work them with ease. You can work in the round with four needles.

After School Sewing Club Winter 25
This project-based course is for any youth curious about how to machine sew. We begin with sewing machine operation. Then we work on fun, small projects covering many of the fundamental aspects of sewing fabric.
Limited to 5 students (8-17yrs of age); 2 students required for class to meet.If a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, you will receive a full refund.
- Level: Learning-to-sew Beginners You have never used a sewing machine or you have but only a little bit.
- We provide: Tool machines, thread, expertise, and encouragement!
- You bring: Yourself
- Class time: Wednesdays 4:30-6:30, five consecutive weeks.
- Students may be asked to purchase their own fabric depending on the project.

SEW MUCH FUN! (First Timer Sewing)
June 16th
Discover the sewist in you! In this project-based camp, we introduce students to the basic techniques of machine sewing. Working together through a small garment pattern they develop these fundamental skills. Students will have fun applying their newly found talents to creations of their own imagination. We invite any returning child to do this camp again. There is so much to explore! Projects include shorts or a skirt. Materials fee: $35
SEWING: THE NEXT STEPS
June 23rd
This is our core camp for kids ages 8-11 who have some or more sewing instruction. We encourage returning students to repeat this camp at least once. We work to keep the project new and enticing for them.
Now that you understand the basics of sewing, let's take the next steps! In this camp we will expand your sewing skills, continue to learn pattern reading and lay out, improve on straight line stitches, hemming, and more. Students will complete a garment and a small project. We will have a variety of patterns from which students may choose. And we always make time for free sewing. Projects include a messenger bag or smock. Materials fee: $35
Summer Camp '24 July
Creatures, Machines and Dreams: Mixed media characters with Jen Schultz
July 14th
Combine a little sewing with quick-drying clay and some magical odds & ends and create your own fantasy characters! Not quite dolls, not quite stuffies -- we will use our imagination, learning to work with clay and mixed materials to add unique details to basic figures like people or animals. Hand or machine-sewing experience are helpful but not necessary. Students will create at least one 8-to-10 inch tall creature, plus learn how to re-use cast-off junk in fun new ways. Material fee: $10 per student.
Involves glue, sanding, supervised use of a power tool for hole-drilling, some basic hand tools.
STITCHING TOGETHER
July 21st
This camp is a hybrid between Sew Much Fun and Next Steps. Designed for the beginning and returning sewists alike. Expand your sewing skills with simple patterns, learn pattern reading, and focus on straight line sewing. We will complete a small project and a garment. Learn the fundamentals of creative sewing the fun way. Projects include smock or a cross body bag. Materials fee: $35

Tunnel Books & Pop-Ups: Making 3-D Storybooks with Jen Schultz
Aug. 4th
Have you ever seen a pop-up book and wondered, How do they do that?! In this camp you learn the basics and use your new 3-Dskills to tell a story. Students make at least one book, depending on the level of difficulty they choose. Cutting, gluing, simple sewing and more with paper and other materials. Includes guidance on how to write a simple tale that pops!
Material fee: $10 per student.
The Evolving Sewist: Advanced Sewing
Aug. 11th
Prerequisites: They have completed at least 2 years of our summer sewing camps; 11yo and up
Ready for your next a challenge? The objective of this camp is to open that door to independent sewing. We will guide students in applying their sewing skills and creativity as they progress through a sewing pattern. We focus on the essential steps involved in working a sewing project from inception to completion. Deepen your knowledge and skills and discover the freedom to sew it alone! Materials fee $40
